Novasure Ablation Q & A

What is NovaSure?

NovaSure is a fast, safe, and simple endometrial ablation procedure that removes the endometrial tissue inside of your uterus.

NovaSure uses the power of radiofrequency (RF) energy to permanently destroy the uterine lining to give you relief from long, painful periods. NovaSure is only appropriate if you’ve finished childbearing as getting pregnant after NovaSure is dangerous.

Why should I get NovaSure?

NovaSure gives you relief from prolonged or heavy bleeding that negatively affects your quality of life.

The experts at Ob-Gyne Associates of Lake Forest, Ltd., may recommend NovaSure if you’re pre-menopausal, don’t want to ever become pregnant, and have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Prolonged periods (seven days or more)
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Fatigue during your periods
  • Refrain from sex because of heavy periods
  • Anxiety or depression during long periods
  • Changing pads or tampons every hour
  • Avoiding activities during your period
  • Anemia from heavy bleeding

Your doctor first takes a complete medical history and conducts a thorough examination to be sure you’re a candidate for NovaSure. You shouldn’t have NovaSure if you have an abnormally shaped uterus, uterine cancer, or other health conditions.

What happens when I get NovaSure?

The entire NovaSure procedure only takes about five minutes. Your doctor inserts a slender wand through your vagina and cervix to reach the uterus. The wand is fitted with a triangular net that your doctor expands once the wand is in place.

After the net has expanded so that it perfectly fits inside your uterus, your OB/GYN runs the RF energy through the wand and into the net for about 90 seconds. After the lining is ablated, your doctor retracts the net and removes the wand.

Although you’re free to go home after your NovaSure endometrial ablation, you should take it easy for a few days. You may experience some pain and cramping, as well as nausea and vomiting. You may also have a watery or bloody discharge that could last for up to two weeks.

What are the benefits of NovaSure?

Your uterus takes about three months to heal from NovaSure. After that time, you can expect benefits such as:

  • Lighter periods
  • Less pain
  • More energy
  • Improved mood
  • Improved sex

One year after NovaSure, 92.8% of women say they’re satisfied with the procedure, and 96.7% would recommend NovaSure to a friend.
